How To Create A Research Paper In The Chicago Style

The Chicago manual style is one of the reference styles that are normally recommended for writing material such as your research papers and thesis papers. It is important for you to make sure that you know what to do with this, and most importantly how to write in Chicago style. A lot of students basically learn how to write and reference using APA and choose to forget about all the other formats. In as much as APA style is one of the most common, this does not mean that all the others are non-existent. Taking time to learn a thing or two about Chicago will actually work well in your favor.

We will discuss some of the basic rules of using Chicago referencing when you are writing any paper in the hope that you can learn a thing or two in the process.

Selection context

This is normally the ultimate selection of choice when referencing material that is either of a historical point of view or humanities. When you are using this method, you will need to use endnotes when referencing instead of using in-text referencing. At the end of your paper, you must have a bibliography instead of a references section as is the case with most of the other styles.

Formatting

The formatting guidelines for Chicago are slightly different from the others. First of all, all the work must be double spaced. The margins on your paper should have a spacing of an inch all around (top, bottom and on either side).

As you go through the paper, ensure that all your pages are numbered, with the exception of the preliminary pages. While still on the subject of numbering your pages, you must also take note of the fact that the pagination has to be done at the top of the page. You however have the choice of either justifying the page number to the right margin or leaving it at the center of the page.

In the event that you are quoting something but it is so long, it has to be set off from the normal text in your work. This also applies when you are quoting three or more poetic lines, prose quotations that go more than two sentences. In the event that you are quoting sentences that drag into more than 8 lines, they must also be set off.
